Overview Cloud ROUTER

This article provides a brief overview of our Cloud ROUTER service, explaining its underlying concept and features.

The DE-CIX Cloud ROUTER provides a fast, secure, and private connection for exchanging data between different cloud environments. It allows direct routing between public and private clouds, which improves application performance by reducing latency. This also enhances security, protects against cyber-attacks, and lowers costs by offering direct connections with reduced egress fees.

Cloud ROUTER and Cloud ROUTER connections

Cloud ROUTER is a virtual Layer 3 routing service that enhances other DE-CIX interconnection services, all built on DE-CIX's high-performance global Apollon platform. Preconfigured Cloud ROUTER instances allow seamless data transfer for various multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud scenarios. It can host multiple connections, such as DirectCLOUD and VirtualPNI, to help you create your ideal network setup.

Cloud ROUTER connections connect Cloud ROUTER with either Cloud Service Provider (CSP) or customers on-premise equipment connected to customers DE-CIX Access via VirtualPNI. Depending on your individual network needs, the following service components can be flexibly combined:

  • Multi cloud setups: Cloud ROUTER + DirectCLOUD Service(s)
  • Hybrid cloud setups: Cloud ROUTER + DirectCLOUD Service(s) + VirtualPNI Service(s) connecting your DE-CIX Access

Example:

Pure multi-cloud setups don’t require a DE-CIX Access / physical presence in a data center of the customer. The DE-CIX Access product is the physical interface / connection to the Apollon platform in a specific DE-CIX location (port / lag), only relevant in hybrid-cloud setups.

Under the hood

The DE-CIX Cloud ROUTER follows a redundancy by design principle, offering great advantages in terms of reliability. Cloud ROUTER is bound to one DE-CIX location (metro-region), but not to one Premium Enabled Site (data center).

Example of the distributed service behavior:

As on-ramps to the desired CSPs and the private equipment are located in 5 different data centers in the above example, DE-CIX Cloud ROUTER expands across all affected edge sites. If an edge site fails or is under maintenance, the Cloud ROUTER and the connections to all other on-ramps remain intact.

Supported clouds

Cloud ROUTER is the routing layer — it is cloud-agnostic by design. The actual on-ramp to a Cloud Service Provider (CSP) is established via DirectCLOUD:

  • Fully automated, self-service via Portal & API: Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud
  • Additional CSPs via semi-automated onboarding: Alibaba, sovereign clouds, regional clouds, special-purpose or AI/GPUaaS providers

Available locations

Cloud ROUTER is available at the following DE-CIX locations. Each Cloud ROUTER instance lets you connect to DirectCLOUD (cloud on-ramps) and/or VirtualPNI (private connections to your DE-CIX Access) — see below for supported clouds.

Connections are not limited to on-ramps within the same location: a Cloud ROUTER can also be connected to a cloud on-ramp or DE-CIX Access in a different DE-CIX location (e.g. a DirectCLOUD on-ramp in New York connected to a Cloud ROUTER in Frankfurt), enabling remote, cross-location connectivity.
