Monitoring AWS DirectConnect uptime

This article walks you through a step-by-step guide for creating individual alert rules for each AWS DirectConnect connection to ensure effective monitoring and timely notifications in case of outages.

Guide

Before proceeding with the step-by-step guide, ensure you have the necessary permissions to create and manage CloudWatch alarms.

Please note: You have to create one alert rule per connection.
  1. Log in to your AWS account. Choose All alarms and click on Create alarm.
  2. In the following wizard Click on Select metric.
  3. Choose DX on the following screen.
  4. Pick Connection Metrics.
  5. Select the Connection you want to monitor and proceed with Select metric.
  6. Set the condition to Lower than 1.
  7. Click Next.
  8. If you have never created an alarm before, choose Create a new topic type in a name for the topic and the Email-address you want to notify in case of an outage.
  9. Click on Create topic.
  10. You receive an email to your specified email address. Klick on the confirm subscription hyperlink within the email.
  11. To check the status of the Email Endpoint click on View in SNS Console. There should be a green checkmark.
  12. Close the SNS Console and click on Next.
  13. Choose a name for the alarm and optionally give it a description.
  14. Click on Next.
    You see a summary of the configured alarm. Double-check the values.
  15. Click on Create alarm.

You successfully created alert rules for your AWS DirectConnect connections.
