DE-CIX Route Server Guide

Joseph Thorwest Updated by Joseph Thorwest

This article provides an overview about our route server and its guides.

DE-CIX operates route server systems to facilitate the exchange of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) announcements between peers. For a detailed description, see RFC7947. Each peer needs only to set up a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) connection to the route server to receive the BGP announcements of all other peers having a BGP connection with the route server.

DE-CIX operates two redundant route servers at each of its Internet Exchanges.

Route servers keep the number of necessary BGP sessions low for DE-CIX customers You need only one BGP session to each of the route servers to receive the prefixes of all other route server users.

Use BGP communities to instruct DE-CIX route servers on which prefixes to announce or withhold. On incoming traffic, use filter lists on your routers to determine which prefixes to accept or reject from the route servers. For newly connected networks, the route servers give a kickstart into peering. They receive all prefixes of all route server users without setting up individual BGP peering sessions. One session to each of the two route servers is enough.
